Lapland's pace of life is a relaxed one, and nowhere more so than in Kilpisjarvi, the northernmost resort in Finnish Lapland. But don’t be fooled by the hushed reverence of the glistening snowscapes and silent tundra – here, there is excitement in the air. Anticipation. Magic.

Kilpisjarvi was born out of epic sagas and fabled encounters between the wise magicians and love-struck giants now immortalised in the Fells encircling the tiny village. The enchantment, the wonder, and the charm still abound – in the shooting stars and the twirling Northern Lights that dance overhead. No wonder then, there are rumours that Santa himself often frequents Lapland’s only mountainous resort. Can you find him?

A short break of 3 or 4 nights in Kilpisjarvi is the perfect family Christmas holiday, filled with a host of exhilarating winter activities that will live long in the memory.

Included Activities

Kilpisjarvi is a set around a large frozen lake which is encircled by a mountainous periphery that stretches to the horizon. The setting is perfect then, for hosting the enticing winter activities included in our Dashing Through the Snow holiday. The safaris are full-length safaris, not ‘taster sessions’, giving you the opportunity to enjoy longer trails and journeys on the experiences. Chances for play time in the snow are plentiful; zoom down the toboggan slope or challenge the family to a snowball fight!

Places are strictly limited, however, to preserve the authenticity of this magical part of the world, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Snowmobile Safari

Duration: Full length

Our snowmobile safari across Lake Kilpis is a family favourite and offers a real chance to explore the pristine snowscapes at speed. Grown-ups share a snowmobile, swapping drivers part-way through the tour, and children are pulled by a sled following behind.

Husky Sled Safari

Duration: Full length

If you’re keen to make some four-legged friends whilst on holiday, then your team of eager huskies await. Sledding across a frozen lake and through the Arctic tundra is exhilarating, thrilling, and a ‘must-do’ – an ideal photo opportunity!

Reindeer Sleigh Ride

Duration: Full length

Santa’s faithful reindeer await to take you by sleigh ride through the wintry wonderland to find Santa’s hidden cabin. Gently ride through the snow, meandering through crunched paths in pristine snow. Do you know the reindeer’s name?

Family Meeting with Santa

Duration: Variable

Of course, no visit to Lapland is complete without a visit to see the REAL Father Christmas in his homeland; you’ve travelled a long way to see him. But where is he? Hop on board a reindeer sleigh and be guided to his secret cabin. Is he there? Come in and find out…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deposit?

To confirm the holiday, the deposit is £200 per person. The final balance is due ten weeks before departure, though these terms may differ if you have booked through a travel agent.

What currency should I take?

The currency in Finland is the Euro. Many hotels and establishments in the Nordic countries will not accept cash and only accept card payments. All Transun optional excursions are advertised in Sterling; credit and debit cards are accepted as payment for excursions booked in resort.

Is the resort commercial and kitsch?

Far from it! Our Dashing Through the Snow tours operate in Kilpisjarvi, the very northernmost point of Finnish Lapland. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty with spectacular scenery which is known as ‘True Lapland’ – unspoiled by the ways of mass-market tourism found in Rovaniemi and Saariselka.

What should I wear?

Temperatures can reach as low as -40c in the winter and so it is imperative that you bring adequate clothing for the weather and take extra care to ensure children are safely warm. We provide a thermal all-in-one snow suit and snow boots on arrival in Lapland, but you should wear multiple under layers and bring hats, scarves and gloves (and plenty of pairs of socks!) We give further details of what to wear in our brochure and in the pre-departure booklet in the My Booking section of our website.

Are the excursions and safaris a specified duration?

Lengths given are approximate and can sometime vary dependent on weather conditions or other circumstances beyond our control. For instance, it may be necessary to curtail husky sledding if temperatures drop to -30c since the activity may pose a safety risk for the guests and a health risk for the dogs.

Can I add on additional excursions and activities when in Lapland?

If you wanted to make your holiday extra special, it is possible to add on additional activities to your tour after arriving in Lapland. However, availability of activities and excursions is limited and so we recommend that you book your place before you travel to guarantee your place.
