It takes a village! If your expectations are sky high, then Lapland’s only mountainous resort will certainly meet your needs.
In the tiny village of Kilpisjarvi, the northernmost resort in Finnish Lapland, the pace of life is a relaxed one, but don’t be fooled by the hushed reverence of the glistening snowscapes and silent tundra – here, there is much excitement in the air. Part of the wonder of Kilpisjarvi, which is nestled in the mountains around a giant frozen lake, is you get to be even more remote and exclusive, and really immerse yourself in the way of life, where you’ll be spoiled with more beautiful scenery than you’d know what to do with. But once you begin to explore, you can’t go wrong – you’ll fall in love with the quaint but fun-filled lifestyle here.
Kilpisjarvi was born out of epic sagas and fabled encounters between the wise magicians and lovestruck giants now immortalised in the fells encircling the resort. The enchantment, the wonder and the charm still abound – in the shooting stars and the twirling Northern Lights that dance overhead.
A short break of three or four nights in Kilpisjarvi is the perfect family Christmas holiday, filled with a host of exhilarating winter activities including tobogganing – like you might have seen in the classic '90s movie Cool Runnings – that will live long in the memory. You’ll go so fast in these toboggans it will make the husky sleds feel slow by comparison!
What to expect
Kilpisjarvi is set around a large frozen lake which is encircled by a mountainous periphery that stretches to the horizon. It’s the perfect place to relax, and enjoy the gorgeous scenery, or explore the village at your own pace. The conditions also make it ideal for hosting the enticing winter activities included in our Dashing Through the Snow holiday.
The best way to really take it in, of course, is by foot, which should be kept warm in a snow boot. We offer our own special guides and tours – and safaris are full-length safaris, not ‘taster sessions’, giving you the opportunity to enjoy longer trails and journeys on the experiences. Chances for play time in the snow are plentiful; zoom down the toboggan slope or challenge the family to a snowball fight! But please keep it friendly, we don’t want a snowball war breaking out!
Places are strictly limited, however, to preserve the authenticity of this magical part of the world, so book early to avoid disappointment!
Enjoy these exhilarating wintry activities combined with snow play and the magical atmosphere of the Christmas season in the heart of True Lapland – far away from busy commercial resorts.
Discover warmth within the wilderness! Choose from apartments, cosy cabins and even glass-roofed Wau Houses while staying in a remote True Lapland village.
