And though they are a frequent visitor to Lapland’s skies – being a natural phenomenon, they arrive on their own terms, filling the still, silent Arctic night with a riot of colour: soaring greens, twirling pinks and roiling blues. 

Fortunately, the week-long Aurora Hunter holiday provides ample opportunity to catch the aurora, as well as to relax in the Arctic surroundings and explore all that this special corner of the world has to offer. From mushing a team of huskies to driving a snowmobile down a frozen river, a host of traditional and cultural excursions are included in this holiday, and the seven-night duration gives ample chances of an aurora sighting.

What to expect

The Aurora Hunter holiday begins with our charter flight to Enontekio, in the far northwestern arm of Finland, avoiding rushed plane transfers or lengthy stopovers at Helsinki or Stockholm. Enontekio is a very small airport and yours is likely to be the only flight arriving that day, or even that week. From there, a transfer to Hetta or Karesuando is approximately 20 to 60 minutes, respectively.

Before or upon arrival at your chosen hotel, thermal snow suits and boots will be distributed, which are yours for the duration of the holiday – there is no need to return them after every excursion. But don’t forget to wear them, it does get cold!

Karesuando is a small border village, with its Swedish and Finnish ‘sides’ being divided by the frozen River Muonio. Your accommodation may be at the Davvi Arctic Star hotel, in the Swedish part of the village, or the more rustic Davvi Arctic Lodge hotel and cabins in the Finnish part of the village. We also have options to stay in the charming town of Hetta, at the edge of the Pallas-Yllas National Park in either the Majatalo or Hotelli Jussantupa – both longstanding, family-run hotels. The holiday is based on a full-board basis, so all meals are included on a buffet service. Our staff will ensure all your needs are met, and that you’re well looked after.
