Laos
One of South-East Asia’s hidden jewels, Laos is a quiet and enchanting country. Known as the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’, the country is largely mountainous and forested, with one or two hidden towns. Luang Prabang, the former royal capital, features an eclectic mix of architectural styles, including numerous French mansions. Vientiane, the current capital, enjoys a peaceful setting on the banks of the Mekong River. The Pak Ou caves are well worth the short boat trip along the Mekong from Luang Prabang. These limestone caves are invested with a religious significance by dint of the many Buddhist carvings and statues.
