Tromso Midnight Sun Marathon

Posted By Transun on 19/06/15

On the 20 June the 25th Tromsø Midnight Sun Marathon will be underway. It is the world’s northernmost marathon and attracts runners from over 50 nations who compete at night – courtesy of the midnight sun which doesn’t set in Arctic Norway from mid-May to mid-July. Although the marathon is the main event, there is also a half marathon, a 10k race and a 4.2k fun-run – and of course a children’s race too so the whole family can take part!

Not only must this be a fantastic course to run – at night under the Midnight Sun which is a sight to behold in itself! - But the city of Tromsø is just as magical and stunning during the polar nights. And on our seven-night two-centre break we incorporate three days at leisure for guests to explore the delights of this unique Norwegian city.

So we thought here at Transun we would give you our top five must-see attractions, which many of those marathon runners will pass during their impressive 42km.

1. Arctic Cathedral

No visit to Tromsø would be complete without a visit to this iconic building, with the lights and stained glass windows lighting up the polar nights, there are some fantastic photographic opportunities to be had!

2. Polaria

Why not have an Arctic experience indoors at the fantastic Polaria aquarium. With films showing the Northern Lights and Arctic wilderness walkways and aquarium, this is a real must for animal lovers.

3. Tromsø University Museum

Learn about Sami culture, archaeology, geology and zoology of Norway at this interesting museum. A must for those that wish to gain a fascinating insight into the culture of the Arctic.

4. Tromsø Polar Museum

With the city named as the “Gateway to the Arctic”, Tromsø has long been an important base for many polar expeditions and the museum exhibits all aspects of the polar seafaring tradition.

5. MS Polstjerna

This boat, built in 1949 is by far the best preserved vessel that has taken part in seal hunting in the Arctic and is an important memorabilia of the tradition of Arctic hunting in the history of Tromsø.
