Whilst other nations enjoy long weekends celebrating the Queen’s birthday, here in Britain we seem to go months without having that “free” day off feeling. However, with August bank holiday Monday looming we have compiled our top four short breaks, allowing you to make the very most of the summer’s last bank holiday. What better way to enjoy a long weekend than in one of Europe’s most unusual and fascinating cities or islands?

 1. Hvar, Croatia

Weekend breaks to Croatia are perfect for a mini escape and our favourite island is undoubtedly the lively island of Hvar. This glamorous island is famed for its crystal clear waters and vibrant nightlife, providing the perfect place to spend your bank holiday weekend. To sample the islands traditional cuisine head to the village of Malo Grablje, around 6km from Hvar Town, this now abandoned village is home to one of the best restaurants on the island. Another top fact about Hvar is that it is one of the sunniest spots in Europe, with an average of 2715 hours of sunlight per year.

 2. Sarajevo, Bosnia

PictureThis year marks the 100th anniversary of the Great World War, making this summer the perfect time to visit the unique city of Sarajevo, the city that sparked the beginning of WW1 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. What could be better than spending your weekend watching endless films in the streets of this historic city?

Whilst many choose to visit Iceland in the winter in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights, we know that there is no better time to experience Iceland than during the summer when the midnight sun offers never-ending days, perfect for exploring the stylish city of Reykjavik. Home to some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes, why not explore these by foot and sign up to the city’s 31st marathon?
