Some bare facts about Finnish Saunas

Posted By Transun on 07/08/2015

Did you know that the word ‘Sauna’ is the only Finnish word that has been internationally accepted in other languages?

There is nothing more Finnish than the sauna, and many Finns believe that one cannot grasp Finland or its culture without bathing in one. Finland has a population of five million and over three million saunas in Finland which comes to an average of one per household!

For Finnish people the sauna is a place to relax with friends and family, and a place for relaxation of the mind, body and soul. Finns think of saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. The sauna used to be a gateway in and out of this world: women would give birth in saunas, and upon a person’s death, the body would be given a final wash there.

One reason this culture has thrived in Finland has been because of the many uses a sauna has. The first thing people did after moving was to build a sauna. You could live in it, make food in the stove, and take care of your personal hygiene.

The expression ““saunanjälkeinen” (“post-sauna”) is said to be the perfect excuse for avoiding doing pretty much anything in Finland. The feeling of being so relaxed, physically and mentally, is something so pleasurable you want to enjoy it in peace as long as you feel like.

Getting invited to a sauna is an honour. It is a bonding process and in Finland it is said that the most important decisions get made in there rather than in meetings.

Real Finnish saunas are dimly lit, there’s no music or smells except for fresh birch and natural tar.Picture

A ‘vihta’ is a bundle of fresh birch twigs used to gently whip yourself with which is good for your skin and leaves you feeling smooth afterwards.
