Activities above the Arctic Circle

Posted By Transun on 12/06/15

The world’s largest recreational bike ride, Vätternrundan celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend. There are no winners in this 300km ride around Lake Vättern in Sweden, as each cyclists wears a timing chip that registers their individual times, although many aim to complete the course within 9 hours – no mean feat!

But for those that wish for a slightly less active holiday experience, our dedicated holidays to Sweden and breaks to Finland include a range of Arctic activities suitable for all levels.

Below are our top three activities ranging from high adrenaline snowmobiling to the leisurely pace of snowshoeing.

1. Snowmobiles

For those with a valid UK drivers licence, you can experience driving your very own snowmobile across the Arctic terrain. Two adults share a snowmobile, and for those travelling with children, those under the age of 15 are pulled along in a purpose built sleigh behind an experienced guides snowmobile. With evening excursions to witness the Northern Lights or a two-hour fell viewpoint safari during the day allowing guests the opportunity to see a spectacular 360° views around Karesuando we have some fantastic memorable excursions for our Arctic guests.

2. Huskies

For many of our clients, the husky experience is the most memorable – and we can see why! Arriving at the husky farm you are introduced to your very own team of dogs that will be puling you across frozen lakes with the cool Arctic air bracing against your face. The dogs are expertly trained and looked after throughout the year and are always eager to please our Arctic guests. After a brief introduction, two people share a sleigh and the chance to mush your team through the Arctic wilderness.

3. Snowshoe

For a much more relaxed and laid-back excursion, this delightful introduction into the age-old means of traversing the Arctic terrain is suitable for all. Taking in the snow-clad landscapes, searching for the reindeer amongst the snow-covered trees all add to this experience. New for this season we are also providing our clients with the opportunity to search for the Aurora Borealis by snowshoeing into the wilderness to a prime vantage point to hopefully witness the stunning Northern Lights.
